William Sidney Mount papers, 1833-1868.

Correspondence and papers, 1833-1868. Most of the letters are related to his work as an artist - more than one letter discusses portrait painting - though there are some personal and family letters. The collection includes some copies of Mount's own letters. There is a group of thirty letters to and from Charles Lanman, including one from Mount's brother, Shepard A. Mount. A letter from Francis Fauvel-Gouraud dated 1839 describes a projected exhibition of works by Daguerre, and an 1851 letter from Victor Gifford Audubon requests a painting for reproduction in Audubon's new technique of color lithography. A letter from Josiah D. Canning suggests one of his poems as a subject for a painting. There are a few sketches, including one of Mount's 1867 painting "Politically Dead," with some discussion of responses to it, and miscellaneous notes on art and other subjects. There are also miscellaneous printed ephemera, tickets and invitations to art exhibitions, including one from Thomas Cole; certificates licensing Richard E. Mount to practice as a lawyer; a list of portraits painted by Mount; miscellaneous printed material about patents; clippings; and a tintype of a young woman.
